I am so sorry you had that experience. My husband had the exact same one as a child and hearing him talk about it is heartbreaking for me. So we have both been SO careful about not doing this. At the same time, I don't really HAVE negative feelings about his stutter other than empathy for his feelings of frustration -- because my husband is the best person I know, as well as a very successful human, boss, teacher, and dad -- and he has a stutter too! We DO talk about it openly with him so he does not feel he has to be ashamed and knows we are here to support him -- just things like "hey, it seems like you felt frustrated just then that you were having trouble getting me to understand what you are saying -- remember that we are always listening and can always wait -- and if you ever want to get some help with it we can help you do that" - or my husband will say "remember I know exactly how this feels, so you can always talk to me about it."
