It is definitely cause by genetics for most people but environment and internal thought processes can change how genes are expressed (it is called epigenetics I think). Current genetic research shows that the genes related to stuttering are both gender-specific and hereditary (passed along in families). Also, fun fact! At onset, stuttering occurs in about a 1 to 1 ratio between males and females . . . but it has a higher chance of persisting in males.
