I have to call out intensive fluency shaping programs. They are arachiac programs based on outdated understanding of what stuttering is and how it works. Many boast 93% - 97% fluency after the program and they're right. They measure your disfluencies when you enter the program, and again at the end and most people see a dramatic increase in fluency. The problem is, it's not transferable. The vast majority of stutterers I've spoken to who have done intensive programs say it has not worked for them. The reason these programs give is because the clients did not keep up with their exercises and didn't practice enough. But it's not about that. That reasoning is based on a flawed understanding of stuttering. Becoming largely fluent in the comfort, support, and novelty of an intensive program is nowhere close to being fluent back in your real life. It's like practicing reading aloud everyday on camera and then being told you now you can do this in front of an auditorium of people so long as you continue to practice every day. That's not how stuttering works. I will say, I have met people who have done fluency shaping programs and they really like them and have seen success and were happy with their results. But those people are by far the minority. The vast majority have had the crushing experience coming home from the program, higher and more confident than ever, only to watch their newfound fluency slowly slip away. They try to use their targets but they fail in the real world where they succeeded in the program. The problem with these programs is they're *unfalsifiable*. If you become fluent, it's because of the program. If you start stuttering again, it's your fault because you didn't work hard enough. Not only is that nonsense, it's harmful and soul crushing. They also reinforce the harmful notion that stuttering is bad and fluency is good. They teach you to speak in a way that is not expression or spontaneous, but robotic or monotone. PWS are free to try anything they'd like, but they should know the deal behind three programs. In my opinion they're big waste of money and time, in addition to reinforcing negative beliefs about stuttering. Buyer beware.
