Personal link between my stutter and total aphantasia first a definition as study of aphantasia is limited and has really only started in the last 5 years. Aphantasia is a condition (really a spectrum) where you cannot form voluntary imagery in your mind. It can also extend to other senses. The spectrum runs from total /r/aphantasia (where the person has no mind’s eye, ear, nose, taste, or touch) to /r/hyperphantasia which i cannot describe. i have total Aphantasia, I am 53, I have stuttered in limited circumstances. I learned last year about aphantasia. I always though the phrase “picture in your mind” was a metaphor and it blew my mind that most people image a movie or hear words spoken in their mind when reading or thinking. on to stuttering.... Just yesterday I had to speak publicly and present and read out loud congratulatory letters. I’ve always stuttered in such circumstances and started that way. I then realized that I was reading much faster than I was speaking (since I don’t have a movie or audio track in my head to slow me down). I intentionally slowed down my reading and matched it to my speaking and BAM — no more stutter! I am actually thrilled to realize I can now work with this and it is only because I can now understand how my brain works. To be fair,it is going to take some time to retrain myself.
