Because stutter **is** a part of who they are. And if they get the message that stuttering is undesirable (which they already get some society) then they get the message, when I stutter i am undesirable. Which leads them to not be able to accept themselves because if they accepted they were a person who stuttered that would mean they were undesirable as a person. An illness is different because a mother worrying about an illness doesn't have much impact on it. Stuttering is much more complex. Is it biological, cognitive, emotional and environmental. The impact of stuttering is influenced by all of those factors, including how it is treated in the home.
