Stutter freely! When you try not to stutter, you only stutter more. Before your speech, relieve the pressure on yourself to perform by being honest with your audience. Tell them you stutter, in your own words, but try to be confident about it, and if you’re comfortable with it, make a light joke to ease the tension in the room. Saying something like “Before I get started, I have an announcement I’d like to make. Hi, my name is () and I stutter. I also get really nervous talking to an audience. But, I believe what I have to say is more important than how I say it. So yes, I have a speech impediment. No big deal, moving on…” may help. Focus on allowing yourself to stutter freely, advertising your stutter to ease your tension, and try to read one sentence ahead of what your saying..this has always helped me with speaking.
