In my opinion: So, what I mean is: **If we are too fused, can we get out of the block without defusing?** Fusion refers to: It can literally refer to any kind of fusion, like for example, if I'm alone, and I tell myself "I will stutter now", then this anticipation is not strong enough (or not fused enough with my conscious control), and so I won't stutter if I speak alone. However, if I speak to someone, I don't simply get an anticipatory thought (that contributes to this fusion), but I may also get 'convinced'. This implies that 'conviction' also plays a critical role in fusion. When I'm speaking to someone, I may get time pressure (and blame myself for not resolving the fusion quick enough basically). I may shift my attention to negative past experiences, or shift to my communication failure one second ago - in the sense of, I tell myself: "See? I truly cannot do it!" - which fuels more cognitive fusion 'as if' I cannot move forward to say my thoughts out loud. There are likely 99.99% other factors that contribute to stuttering fusion, such as: story-telling. Story-telling refers to - for example, we tell a story to ourselves where we shift out attention to obsessional doubt and possibility to stutter. So, we rely on our imagination when coming to conclusions about reality, like: it's always possible that we can stutter on a feared letter. In a story-telling, we convince ourselves with a story (instead of a sequence of events). Suppose I pick up a pen and try to convince you the pen is really a secret camera. I could just state this pen is a camera and discuss the make and type of camera. This statement on its own might not be too convincing. But suppose I relate a story about it being built in the same factory as James Bond’s special car. How the developer won a prize for his work. It was tested in field trials in different situations. Finally it was patented and is now in general use as a spy pen. The richer the scenery and the descriptive detail, the more it is lived in. ([1](https://www.reddit.com/r/Stutter/comments/xr6luy/tips_for_people_who_stutter_advice_on_how_to/)) In the same way, if I label mild-error prone speech as an actual stutter disorder, I label myself as a PWS (etc) - then I start gaining a feeling of being immersed in the story and the detachment from everyday life, which allows the imagination free rein. In this way we make the fusion (such as, feared words) more vivid, personal and meaningful. This can simulate reality. This is because the story can be so convincing that you actually begin to experience the story ‘as if’ it was real. We are so immersed in a life of stuttering, we are constantly arguing about the content of this life 'as if' it's a real phenomena (making the fusion more real in our minds). So, the problem is relying on possibility to begin with if there is nothing in the here and now to support the obsession. The story leads you to believe that maybe there is something wrong in reality and that therefore you should act in reality to overcome it. But the doubt is only a story. So when you give in to the story, you are only encouraging more doubt. Which is why the more you rely on the inhibitory mechanism that decides whether or not to say our thoughts out loud, the deeper you go into the stutter disorder/problem, the less you are in touch with reality and so the more you doubt. Ironically, in going into 'stutter problem land', you sometimes feel you are getting deeper into reality, but it’s exactly the opposite: the more you go into the stutter problem, the further away you go from reality. This explain how 'stuttering fusion' maintains the vicious circle, or increases the stutter disorder, and makes it harder to get out of a speech block. Obviously, it makes sense that 'defusion' could increase the chance of getting out of a block. However. Can we also get out of a block, without defusion? I'm truly interested to know if this is possible
