Hello. There’s no super concrete evidence on whether or not stuttering is hereditary. That being said, I have a stutter (I am now 21), and my dad / his father both had stutters when they were children, but grew out of it (I wasn’t so lucky). I have shared your fears / concerns ever since I first thought of having kids. I remember all of the horrible stuff I went through because of my stutter. What sucked though was I realized I was alone in it. I had nobody in my life who was like me (my dad grew out of his really early / my grandfather died before I was born). That being said, you are there for your child. You can be there to help him through some of the things that I assume, like me, you were on your own for. I don’t know if anyone in your family stutterers. But as for me, I don’t hold it against my father. Stuttering is a rather under-researched field and we don’t know a ton about it. Don’t feel too bad about it. It’s not your fault, it just happens. A lot of people on this sub didn’t even develop stutters because of someone in their family. These things just happen. Be there for your son, give him the kindness and compassion and love that I feel like most of us didn’t get because people didn’t understand our problem. You can help him as best you can in the ways you’ve learned to manage… AND that’s only if he DOES stutter. And keep in mind most stutterers are children and DO grow out of it. Just love him. He loves you.
