People in college or thinking about going to college: Register with the university's student disability services. I have always had a moderate to severe stutter, and the first thing I did when I entered university was register with the Student Disability Services. Without this, college would have been a nightmare. They helped communicate to professors of my stutter, and almost every course provided accommodations and modifications to public speaking requirements, presentations, etc. It also helped my stutter feel legitimized. Although I was the only stutterer, it was amazing being able to meet so many other disabled people who you could speak freely to without fear of being judged. I of course still had to take the required public speaking class, but it still felt better being able to have that conversation with the professor before the semester began to discuss accommodations and grading modifications. If you feel afraid to pursue further education due to your stutter, I encourage you to look into your target university's student disabilities services. It varies between universities, but a stutter does qualify you for these assistances.
