Hey, sorry for the late response. I can't really say specifically what's helped with the PhD program except understanding when presenting your work at conferences, etc., that you're essentially the "expert" and know what you're talking about. You might already have the confidence to talk about it because you have to do that, at least in my lab, almost weekly with the rest of your colleagues and advisor. There's a lot of practice involved so you're not necessarily ad-libbing, but when it comes to Q&A, it can be a bit tough. If I feel myself about to stutter, I'll use different words or phrasing that mean the same. Also slightly pronouncing things differently. For example, words that start with "th" can be difficult for me, so I might pronounce "th" slightly differently. When speaking somewhat quickly, or virtually, it's easy to do that without sounding strange. With virtual conferences, it's much easier to hide the frustration since my screen is sharing a PowerPoint presentation instead of my face, and I can quickly self-mute until I get over a block if needed. I treat conferences like a talk with friends. Very informal. That helps mentally, at least. I haven't had to do an in-person conference yet, I'm planning on doing that this September. The few times I've had to talk about my work in-person was within the school or in class, where there are only a handful of people who either are already in my lab or they're like any other student and really aren't paying attention or care. I guess for me, most of it is mental and assuming people either don't care, or I'm the one giving new information that others don't know about. A lot of what's helped me work around stuttering are things I've been doing for over 20y, so at this point, it's pretty much second nature, I hardly think about it unless I'm really struggling with a block.
