Not sure if this is helpful, but something like [this](http://websites.psychology.uwa.edu.au/school/MRCDatabase/uwa_mrc.htm) allows you to search by written or verbal frequency (e.g., how common in written form or spoken form). If you have a minimum word frequency you may get rid of those very rare words
