I can't speak for everyone of course, but I've found that many people who stutter (myself included) actually like it when people ask questions about our stuttering. Maybe your friend is more than willing to talk about it too? (if not, you can always ask "is it OK if I ask you about it?") Kudos for taking an effort into learning about it for your friends sake. I am sure he appreciates that.
