My speech therapy doesn't make sense

My speech therapy doesn't make sense I started few weeks ago. Basically the main idea of this speech therapy is to see my stuttering as an "iceberg" with obvious problems on top and "hidden" problems at the bottom. Obvious problems would be something like verbal ticks that I do when I think I will stutter. For example I sometimes say "umm" when I think I will stutter on my next word. Or when I look away when about to stutter. However the speech therapist didn't point them out herself she just told me to find the ticks that I consider problematic. So I will slowly have to remove them one by one. However what doesn't make sense is that even if I remove all of them, how will my stuttering improve? I tried to avoid all those things but the amount of stuttering is the same.
