It's still largely misunderstood, and it's been the butt of jokes in the media for way too long, too. I'm in retail management and I have to deal with angry customers at times. I'm often pretty good with my fluency but at times when it's a sticky situation and / or when I'm really anxious, it's not a great time. I was dealing with someone who was angry about a policy, and I was struggling to speak, she wasn't letting me talk. It was a heated discussion. I got a few words in, and she cut me off by saying, and I quote: "I need to talk with someone who can actually communicate with me". I ended up angrily writing down my upper managements phone number and ran to the back with tears in my eyes. I gave them a rundown over text message as to what happened, and they dealt with it. I'm usually able to brush comments like that off, I'm really light with my stutter and I try to have a positive attitude. That hurt. That really hurt.
