The first stage is acceptance. We unlucky few who bring a stutter into adulthood have to accept that for the foreseeable future this is the way it is, but that’s not a death sentence. There are many different ways in which you can try to improve your situation, trust me I’ve tried them all, speech therapy, acupuncture, hypnosis etc which depending on what works well for you will help you speak, but you’ve got to remember it’s not going to be 100% cure. I didn’t have much luck in the many solutions I tried so I decided to quit the lot and took on a “just do it” mentality. Sure, people took the piss, gave me looks and I got accused of being drunk a few times but for me, the more I went out of my comfort zone, the more of a confidence boost I got and now, although I still stammer frequently, it doesn’t bother me at all. That worked for me but it might not work for you, so I would say don’t be afraid to try different therapies/treatments/techniques! I’m not a hippy but life is great, don’t let this thing deprive you of the experiences life can offer. It’ll take time but you will get there.
