In my experience, avoidance reduction is the worst thing you could do. For years I was amazing at hiding my stutter. I had friends for a few years that had no idea how bad my stutter really was. I would pick and choose speaking opportunities, bow out if I had to speak in front of a group. Only really talk when I was drunk, etc. This created a **massive** amount of anxiety that took years to unearth — I was always pretending to be someone I'm not. I stutter. That's fine. As soon as you openly stutter, own it, not be ashamed by it, you will be on the way to recovery and your stuttering will diminish.
