I strongly recommend the Stuttering Foundation Podcast dated August 9 2022 with Dr. Evan Usler “Why Stuttering Occurs: The Roll of Cognition, Conflict and Control”. Dr Usler himself had a severe stutter but is largely fluent now. I believe it is getting at what you are referring to—and was easier for me to conceptualize. There is a link to an original study but it is in technical language and the podcast boils it down to the essence and the implications for use.
