Thank you so much for the kind and fast reply! Of course everything is through zoom, and we spoke for 10 minutes in between my classes on Wednesday. Here’s the kicker — the full story is that it’s actually a public speaking course. He told me on Wednesday that he is taking the course to resolve the stuttering issue, but I’m not a speech pathologist. He indicated that he is aware of that. We are almost done with the first round of ungraded speeches — students speak about something they are proud of. Several of them have spoken about overcoming eating disorders, psychiatric issues, bullying, etc. In other words, a safe space has been established. Still, he is telling me that he was in a much better place before Covid, and that Covid created a huge setback. During our private zoom, I saw that it’s not just that he’s stuttering, his entire body seizes when he tries to speak. I told him that I can see the frustration and intelligence in his eyes and that I will do everything I can to support him, but, I don’t know that my compassion is enough. I’ve offered to have continuing one-on-one practice sessions with him, to suspend the time limit for speeches, and basically do whatever he needs me to do for him to feel successful and to get through the semester. But I don’t know that my offers are enough, or that I’m making the best offers. More advice/thoughts?
