I have had similar experiences. I'm from Glasgow and have a really strong Glaswegian accent. I travel a lot, and when abroad and speaking to people whose first language isn't English, I have to speak in a much more slow, exaggerated accent so that people can understand me better. I still stammer, but it is much more fluent. Doing the same thing in Glasgow and around people I know would seem pretty weird though.
