To be answer directly, I would certainly say it is not severe, but I’m not sure I would say my fluency issues are minor. It comes and goes and is very situational. Stressful situations are unsurprisingly worse. It used to get worse when I would notice someone is getting impatient with my stutter, but I somehow developed a “fuck you, be patient” attitude somewhere along the way. There are days where I might only stutter once or twice all day, and it’s like the best day ever. Other days I can barely get two words out and god forbid I have to say something that starts with a “w” or an “r.” Most days it’s in between, getting blocked on words for a couple seconds every couple of minutes. That said, I’m somehow able to control it a lot better in certain situations, like during opening and closings. It’s something to do with hyper focus and almost forgetting I have a stutter. It’s also quite empowering to realize that they have to listen to me whether I stutter or not and can’t cut me off in most cases. I’m not sure how much you like auditing or whether you’re still considering law school, but being a lawyer doesn’t always mean you have to go to court. Many attorneys rarely leave the office, like transactional work. Some attorneys don’t even have to pick up the phone very often, like appellate work, especially before administrative Article I courts.
