Stuttering can be traumatic for sure. There’s “Big T Trauma and Small t trauma”. Basically Big T trauma is trauma from a specific event that was catastrophic or emotionally/physically painful. Small t trauma is what us stutterers experience. This is basically ongoing traumatic events over a long period of time. Just like with us stutterers, we experience a lot of these smaller traumatic events that impact us. It’s like stabbing at a wound every time it would trying to heal. I think our self worth can be impacted the most - “I just won’t talk/ it’s not worth the effort/ I am less than others because of my stutter”. I find the more negative self-talk you have after a speaking situation predicts how much small t trauma you have experienced in relation to stuttering. Not always but generally. If you find you speak negatively to yourself after speaking situation, or are very critical of yourself, chances are some psychological trauma informed therapy would help. I suggest IFS, EMDR and somatic therapies for trauma in general.
