Famous people who stutter part 1 James Earl Jones (1931 - 2024) James was an actor, voice actor, and stage performer who overcame a childhood stutter to become a legend of the stage and screen Jones was born in Arkabutla, Mississippi and raised by his grandparents in Michigan after his father left the family. He developed a severe stutter and rarely spoke, but turned to writing poetry to express himself. Jones' high school English teacher encouraged him to recite poetry in class, which helped him overcome his stutter and fear of public speaking. Jones graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in drama in 1953. He then studied at the American Theatre Wing in New York City under Lee Strasberg. Jones made his Broadway debut in 1957 in Sunrise at Campobello. He also performed in many Shakespeare in the Park productions, including Othello, Hamlet, Coriolanus, and King Lear. Jones made his film debut in 1963 in Dr. Strangelove directed by Stanley Kubrick. Jones is best known for his role as Darth Vader in the original Star Wars trilogy. He also played Mufasa in The Lion King (1994) and The Lion King (2019). Jones also voiced the CNN tagline, "This is CNN". Jones won Tony awards in 1969 for The Great White Hope and in 1987 for Fences. He was also awarded Kennedy Center Honors in 2002. Jones died on September 9, 2024 at the age of 93.
