I used to spend tons of effort hiding my stutter (avoidance, word switching, lying, etc) so most people had no idea what was going on when I suddenly paused and grimaced right before answering an easy question. People would make a confused face, or offer to help, finish my sentence, ask if I was ok. But it wasn’t because they were uninformed jerks. It was bc I was trying to hide the real situation.
