I can't comment on the military aspect, but I am a firefighter and during my academy I had to use a radio all the time and it terrified me. Luckily the rules are to talk slowly and loudly, so I did ok. I don't use the radio much on shift, but even so I haven't had any major issues. My only issue on shift is saying my last name on command...so that's fucking embarrassing.
