I can’t imagine anyone saying that “you just have to want to be fluent enough” unless they don’t have a stutter themselves. That sounds a lot like my brother and dad when I was young and they’d tell me to just “stop stuttering”. As if it’s something you’re doing intentionally 😂 And with “don’t let your stutter control you”, I think that can potentially be a valid statement depending on how severe the stutter is. My stutter is very mild and I think it’s probably fair to say that the psychological control it has over me is probably a lot more impactful on my life than the stutter itself. Mine isn’t usually even recognizable anymore but the residual anxiety from growing up with one is still there and I often don’t take the sufficient steps to overcome it. But for someone with a severe stutter, I would have to imagine that you can’t stop it from controlling you. I can’t speak on this because mine isn’t severe but I’ve always thought that having a severe stutter would have profound impacts on your life and really put up a lot of restrictions in most domains of life. It really sucks and makes me feel bad but it’s true.
