I started stuttering in the age of 15 in high school, until I was cca 20 year old, I stuttered covertly and it was not noticable, then it started to worsen so I went to speech therapy for the first time, because I could not handle it anymore. It helped a lot, I even went to comunication training class in my University and handled it quite great - that was the point I became stuttering overtly. Now I am 26 and after spending 1 year in Japan for internship, it was awesome, now I am back to my home country, working as a PhD student and it is getting worse and worse, it is not encouraging, I wonder how it will be in few years... For some people, the stutter is just getting worse over time, on the other hand, you are more used to it and so the psychological aspects are improving, though it is a quite demotivating. Look at for e.g. Gareth Gates who is known as trainer in McGuire programm. It is unfortunate but it seems that the stutter is also coming back to him no matter what techniques or how much calm he is... But, I am very happy for people that stutter disappeared later in life, for me it was the opposite. I enjoyed my childhood as the stutter free and I am also very greatfull for that.
