SLP who specialize in stuttering have figured it out. Many PWS struggle the most to say their own name. Could this possible be a result of having been given a name that our speech muscles can’t make well? Of course not, especially because most of us can say it perfectly fine when alone. Most stutterers develop unconscious sophisticated avoidance behaviors. Your name is one of the few things you cannot avoid. “Hey, where do you want to eat?” PWS thinking they want to try that new sushi place, but block on the name - still have lots of alternate options - the place next to Home Depot, someplace w good salmon rolls, a sushi place, maybe that new one “Hey, what’s your name?” There’s almost always only one appropriate response. The stress/block comes *from* the fact that there’s no alternate option. Learning this is one of the main keys in decreasing impactful hard, silent blocks.
