“People who stutter make me uncomfortable.” I don’t stutter, but I’ve thought a lot about this bc this issue is a hard one for my husband, who does. He often feels like he makes people uncomfortable when he talks, and he hates that. But I don’t think I agree with thinking about it that way. I think there’s actually a big difference between “That person was uncomfortable with my stutter” and “My stutter made that person uncomfortable,” and I think the first version is true. It can be uncomfortable listening to someone stutter, but that’s on the person who is uncomfortable to manage. It’s actually not that hard to get comfortable with somebody’s stuttering. My husband can’t decide not to stutter, but a person he talks to regularly can decide to get comfortable with it. I think the onus should be on the listener to get comfortable, because it is totally possible to.
