I'm a speech pathologist and a person who stutters. First, his elementary speech therapist misinformed you. Stuttering is in no way related to IQ or being "smart." Also, early intervention is best. He or she should have been treating your son while he was in first grade. Second, I'm glad you talked to him given that he's shown signs of being aware. As far as therapy goes, the aim of stuttering is shifting towards acceptance of stuttering rather than eliminating stuttering. There is no cure for stuttering, but a speech therapist can help you and your child accept his speech (primarily) and improve his fluency (secondarily). A good speech pathologist will use this approach. Find a good one. Sadly, there is a lot of misinformation out there and many speech pathologiat feel uncomfortable treating people who stutter. Nothing is wrong with your son, but he is going through trials right now that fluent speakers could never imagine. An educated speech therapist could be so helpful for him, you, and your husband. Let me know if you need anything.
