I can give children the benefit of the doubt to an extent. Adults' reactions are usually just an unfortunate side effect of their own self consciousness at not knowing how to interact with an unfamiliar situation, so they automatically laugh or make a stupid joke because they don't know how to just sit in their discomfort and be patient with someone.
