Absolutely. Recently I've been doing some work with Internal Family Systems. There are psychological constructs like exiles - suppressed wounded child aspects, protectors - which reinforce that suppression to avoid the pain, firefighters - which may act with aggression as a defence mechanism. They all have a purpose and play important roles, and can have alternative, more healthy roles once unburdened and healed. Demonising aspects of the psyche is like recognising unhelpful thoughts and behaviour, without recognising the valid reason they exist and what pain is being hidden. These parts of ourselves need compassion and understanding to be healed.
