What works for me the most is slowing my rate down. Not longer pauses between words, but to slowing my overall speech gives me more control and a better feel of what I am doing as I speak. We are super sensitive about our own personal rate, so a small difference will sound weird, but it won't to anyone else. Trust me, I've run the experiment many times. The other thing that works for me is to do all the background stuff, like taking care of myself, getting enough sleep, framing my mind, that kind of stuff. If I go into a situation thinking I'm gonna fall on my face, chances are I will fall on my face. But, if I go in knowing what I want to say and how I want to say it, I can start with less tension and deal with blocks better when they happen. Usually, this works. Other things: read out loud, talk to yourself, be supported by friends/family/other stutterers, use a very light touch on that first sound, take a sip of water to give yourself time to pause and reset, practice, try again tomorrow, video record your own speech and analyze it, meditate, voluntarily stutter in a controlled manner, give yourself permission to stutter, don't let the bastards get you down, take care of yourself, know when to give yourself a break, notice, recognize, and feel good about the times when it went well, and finally: NEVER give up.
