I’ve been stuttering since 4 years old, and I’m currently working towards my masters. I’m not in law school, but I have to speak often, take part in discussion groups and presentations, and give case presentations. Some things that have helped me: 1. Chew a piece of gum when you need to speak. I’ve found that it usually helps my speech quite a bit. It distracts me from thinking about my stutter, and I think your body thinks “hey, if I’m chewing/eating something, I’m not going to die, right?” so you sort of relax in a way. Also, it keeps your mouth moist and helps prevent it from drying out due to nerves. Obviously you would need to use it discreetly. If you do it this way people often won’t notice. You can even do a half-stick of gum if a whole stick is too much. 2. Have a fidget item in one of your hands when you speak. Again, it’s subtle if it’s small. Fidgeting with it discreetly while you speak can distract you from thinking of your stutter and let you thoughts/speech flow more freely. Fidgetland.com sells cheap, small fidget gadgets perfect for this. Hope this helps. These things won’t make you more “fluent”, but they help in other ways. Best of luck my brother, I know what you’re going through. We will make it through. One step at a time.
