So true. It suggests that we are not to be taken seriously but laughed at or pitied. The stigma is also internalized. Although we might have earned professional careers( medicine, law, academics,) we’re always viewed as less than our fluent peers. I know of one exception, though. He’s Dr. Gerald Maguire, MD. He’s the head of psychiatry for a major California medical school and the world’s most expert person in the field of stuttering. He is also a stutterer! Go Gerry.
