I know many people who stutter who work as nurses, with varying degrees of severity. One works in a very busy NYC hospital emergency department. She lets people know she stutters - once it’s out there, people adapt. Her stuttering has never impacted patient care. I know another who stutters who is a lactation nurse. New moms anxious about their infant don’t care about the nurse’s stutter. Actually we who stutter care a whole lot more about how we sound than other people do. And we let it take up so much headspace. If you project confidence and that it’s no big deal, so will coworker’s and patients. That college advisor was wrong. Go after what you want! Will it be harder sometimes? Yes, but those hard moments disappear in moments and you move on to providing top notch patient care.
