I was at a bar a couple weeks ago watching the UNC vs Duke basketball game. I'm a big UNC fan. I'm usually pretty quiet at places like that, but a few drinks will open me up, even if I'm stuttering badly that day. I'm also very passionate about basketball and know more than the average joe. So did this other guy there. He was cheering for Duke. He eventually started talking fact-based shit and I started talking fact-based shit right back at him. Yeah, I was stuttering, but the alcohol just kept me going. During a commercial break late in the game, he just breaks character and says to me, "dude, I can tell that you've got a speech impediment, but I just gotta say that you handle it well, and I like talking to you." Something along those lines. I would've probably gotten annoyed and ended the conversation there—it's like calling someone out for being fat, in my eyes—if I was sober, but instead I thanked him and we clanged drinks. UNC won and we shook hands after the game. He's my friend now. I haven't seen him since then, but if I see him again, he'll be my friend.
