I think stuttering and features of autism have similarities.. I argue, that specialists who diagnose people - to check whether they are autistic, might not correctly understand the stuttering disorder (specifically the covert aspects under the iceberg, such as scanning for threat, circumlotion of words and reformulation of phrases, and monitoring-response mechanism aka high reactivity/sensitivity in stuttering). Let me give an example: check the list below: **List of similarities between stuttering and autism:** # Cognitive and Perceptual Difficulties * Difficulty distinguishing details from the bigger picture * Difficulty maintaining the bigger picture * Difficulty understanding abstract concepts * Trouble with adapting to new or unexpected situations * Difficulty with perspective-taking and understanding others' viewpoints # Communication Challenges * Difficulty with verbal and non-verbal communication * Trouble initiating and maintaining conversations * Difficulty interpreting social cues and body language * Challenges with understanding sarcasm and idiomatic expressions * Literal thinking and interpreting language literally # Social Interaction Issues * Difficulty forming and maintaining friendships * Challenges with social reciprocity and back-and-forth interactions * Preference for solitary activities over group activities * Difficulty understanding social norms and rules * Challenges with empathizing with others # Behavioral and Sensory Issues * Repetitive movements or behaviors (e.g., hand-flapping, rocking) * Intense focus on specific interests or topics * Sensory sensitivities (e.g., to lights, sounds, textures) * Rigid adherence to routines and resistance to change * Difficulty managing transitions and disruptions to routines # Emotional and Self-Regulation Challenges * Difficulty identifying and expressing emotions * Problems with emotional regulation and mood swings * Heightened anxiety and stress levels * Meltdowns or shutdowns in response to overwhelming situations * Difficulty coping with frustration and disappointment
