It might come in time, but my experience was that I needed more specific knowledge/tools. You are 100% right that The more you try to not stutter (repetitions/prolongations) , the more you stutter (probably debilitating blocks and avoidance behaviors). The quicker, direct, and sustainably effective way that most all SLPs who specialize in dysfluency suggest to address this is to just let yourself stutter! Specifically, do voluntary repetitions. Start in a mirror, make eye contact with yourself, build up to calling stores, then in person. When talking to ppl, disclose, either directly or w voluntary repetitions. Begin talking as follows- w eye contact, on an *exhale*, and slowly. As you go, enunciate, use phrasing, and using interesting/appropriate tone, timing, cadence and body language.
