I really hate how people think things can be solved by “having confidence” I have been thinking about this for a while and I see it everywhere from dating to job interviews to making friends. But before I go on, I want to break down the definition of confidence first. Confidence - “the feeling or belief that one can rely on someone or something; firm trust.” As stated above confidence is the feeling of security. To further extrapolate, we feel want to feel confidence in a situation in which we face a potential tribulation. This is the issue with stuttering, especially severe stuttering. Imagine being a soldier going to war, and your gun is known for jamming (once per magazine). You definitely aren’t going to be confident going into battle and despite any measures you previously made to your weapon it doesn’t function any better. How are you supposed to be confident? You can put up the bravado of being confident but you still know in your heart of hearts that you are absolutely screwed in comparison to your buddies who have weapons that work 99% of the time. You can use this comparison for anything. Cars, internet, tools, you name it. Having “confidence” doesn’t matter if you know you don’t have the proper tools for the job. I don’t know if it’s because I’m becoming more and more of a logical/head thinker than a naive feeling/heart thinker but this cliche platitude of “having confidence” is more often than not coming from people who don’t understand your situation or aren’t in the same severity category as you.
