The quote is out of context then. But I would argue that practically every technique I learned in speech therapy is a trick. One person's trick is another's technique. And I have no problem with avoidance if the action being avoided is retraumatising, and if that's the case, the psychological problem needs to be addressed before the avoidance issue.
