I too have had this same experience, I am a life long stutterer. I'm 29 now and have come to accept it a little bit. I mostly get treated like I am stupid at work, because everybody automatically assumes stuttering means there is something wrong with you mentally..... Which actually people who stutter has an IQ 14 points higher than he national average. My boss banned me from ordering parts over the phone, because of my stutter. He said he parts people don't have time for me to "SPIT IT OUT". In school they tried to put me in special education citing stuttering is a form of severe mental illness. I feel some people, like myself feel like we will never get over stuttering. Caused by the trauma we have had. What I mean is even if I am comfortable speaking to someone. My mind automatically jumps to fear, and thinks I will automatically be judged, or treated like I'm stupid. I know for me it has caused depression in a way.
