I developed a stutter at 63 years old after I lost my job and my house, and had to move. I’ve heard that stress-related stuttering is rare but I always had a hard time speaking. I fumbled for words, blocked, had to rephrase because something wasn’t what wanted to say. So, I don’t really know what can cause a stutter to come up suddenly unless it’s from a brain injury. Or the stress I experienced was enough to push the speech part of my brain over the edge. Whatever the case, I’ve embraced it as part of me just like being autistic. I don’t try to cover or hide either one. I should mention that when I’m singing or chanting Sanskrit hymns and prayers I don’t stutter at all.
