That's just not true. It's like saying the only person who can cure my broken arm is someone who's broken their arm. We often think of our stutter as something that we own and have exclusive knowledge of. That's just not true. Think about the Doctor who's treated hundreds and hundreds of stutters. Who do you think has a better understanding of stuttering, you or the doctor? SLPs who specialize in stuttering spend years learning about stuttering and working with people who stutter. Same thing with psychologists. A psychologist doesn't need to have been suicidal to help people who are dealing with suicidal thoughts. And stuttering isn't genetic the same way that skin color is. There's a genetic factor, but that doesn't determine that you're offspring would necessarily stutter. I grew up with a severe stutter. Father of three and none of them stutter. The only limits you face are the ones that you place upon yourself. I'm not saying stuttering isn't a heavy burden to bear. But it's manageable. Stutters have gone on to become actors, singers, and presidents. There's no reason why you have to manage it alone though. Get some help. We all need help from time to time with different things.
