I was taught some fluency shaping and modification techniques, as well has dealing with things like social anxiety, fear of stuttering, negative attitudes towards stuttering, fear of other’s perceptions. I find that while the fluency shaping/modification was helpful, it’s never going to work 100% of the time and it takes a lot of cognitive effort to use. The most beneficial parts of the therapy I’ve received was geared towards being comfortable stuttering in front of all people! At the end of the day, it is neurological and any ‘techniques’ we learn to be more fluent are just a bandaid. Being comfortable stuttering can not only reduce your fear of it happening/reduce the fear of listener perception, but it can reduce the physical tension that builds when you anticipate stuttering or are stuttering on a word. For some, it can help turn a 10s block into a 2-3s repetition.
