I learned to love documentaries by watching the 1960's-70's rock docs that helped define verité cinema - Gimme Shelter (about the Rolling Stones), Don't Look Back (Dylan), Isle of Wight: Message to Love (famous disastrous music festival in England), and even Bittersweet Motel (Phish). Modern docs are pretty extraordinary in how they shape story and repackage the world around us: Time (Oscar nom this year), Hale County This Morning, This Evening (Oscar nom 2019).
