I feel like trying psychotherapy would be more in line with your goals of changing your emotional response. At 36 it certainly is possible (I am 39), but as you know, you have decades of negative responses to "undo". A therapist can help you change your mindset when you approach conversations. You also need to examine why you feel inadequate and shameful. For me, there was a lot of underlying fear.
