Kudos for including a character like us :) It’s always amazing when someone asks the sub for input on what stuttering is actually like in real people, because in movies it can be exaggerated or presented completely wrong. I’m not sure if I’ll be repeating what’s been previously said but this is my experience. Stuttering definitely affects people differently, some have a mild stutter or if you’re unlucky you’ll have a more severe stutter (such as myself). Some people stutter on vowels, consonants, or both indiscriminately. It honestly depends on the day, time, person’s stress levels, and literally a multitude of factors. I’m not sure if people stutter differently, but I think that different causes can result in different severities (how frequently one blocks or repeats). I know that before I stutter, I can feel it in the masseter muscle (right on top of the jaw joint) and in the upper half of my throat. Sometimes I can feel a little pressure in my head too but I’m not sure if that’s like a common thing for stuttering. For me, I always stutter on vowels and w’s (w-w-what do you w-want?). I do try to use synonyms but it’s challenging because every time I do I get weird looks because nobody knows advanced vocabulary these days, only older folks do (maybe that’s why I’ve always connected with them better). It certainly does affect me a lot because as someone with a severe stutter, fewer people are comfortable talking to me as opposed to someone with a milder impediment. I’ve even had strangers come up to me directly and start harassing me to my face when I go out with friends. One time this happened while I was out with my roommate, and some older “gentleman” started spewing a bunch of bullshit about how I couldn’t have a good career because of my stutter, I couldn’t do this and this, etc..... my roommate started crying while I just brushed it off and carried on, that’s how desensitized I’ve become to encounters like these. I hope this helps :)
