How stuttering made me a better person Like a lot of you, I deal with the frustration, anxiety, and depression of stuttering. It doesn't define who I am, but only controls me if I allow it. These are some of the ways stuttering helped me in my life. Because it made me an introvert, keeping my thoughts to myself, I became a better listener. My ability to listen first then form well-reasoned and articulate thoughts, regardless of fluency, allows my spoken responses to be more meaningful and intelligent. People who recognize and value this from me are my friends. Because I was afraid to speak, I read a lot. This made me smarter and worldly. So when I chose to speak, my words can be poetic, knowledgeable, and insightful. I don't need to be fluent or verbose to be impactful. Because I was afraid to speak, I learned to communicate beautifully through writing, drawing, and art. This helped me shape, share my thoughts and ideas. It gave me other voices and hope for success. It also gave me self confidence to build upon and pull me into the light. All of these skills define who I am, not the stuttering. It is the stuttering that gave me these skills and my life would far less remarkable without them.
