What helps to lessen my stutter Hi all, I'm a middle-aged woman who's had a mild to moderate stutter my whole life. Never went to speech therapy (it was the 70s, plus my parents were a bit useless). However, I do a lot of teaching and speaking to audiences, so have had to find things that help me. I'm not an expert, just someone sharing what I've found. 1) I've learned that avoiding coffee on days I'm going to be facing an audience makes a huge difference. I'm not saying coffee causes stuttering, but if you do stutter, it could exacerbate it. (This one is a pain because I LOVE coffee -- the stronger the better! The second an event is finished, I'm racing to get a cup). 2) Get a good night's sleep the night before. My stutter gets significantly worse when I'm tired. 3) Eat something! I don't tend to eat breakfast, but force myself to on days when I know I'm facing an audience, making a video, etc. I also have a snack about 10-15 minutes beforehand to keep my blood sugars level. I've had the experience of being reasonably fluent, then feeling my blood sugars take a dive and suddenly I can hardly get a word out. These three things together make a BIG difference for me. I still stutter, but it's much 'gentler' and far easier to handle. It's not fool-proof, but it really helps. I know it's not the same for everyone -- just thought I'd share these tips in case someone finds them helpful. :-) What helps you?
