Great question - an important point (from my perspective at least) is remembering that stuttering isn't generally caused by "nervousness" or "lack of confidence", although the reverse is often true. I'd actually consider myself a reasonably confident public speaker - but I still have to deal with nerves because I know I'll probably be a bit disfluent. But I'm not disfluent because I'm nervous. Hopefully that distinction makes sense.
